Gas

A natural gas leak near a park on the city's southeast side was apparently due to a gas pipeline that was inadvertently laid through a storm sewer. The underground gas lines, installed more than a decade ago by the gas company, were not supposed to pass through the concrete storm sewer. Following weekend heavy rains, the storm sewer filled up and the likely worn down gas pipes cracked inside the sewer. A gas company official said the situation has been remedied by locating the two gas pipelines, removing and reinstalling them underneath the storm sewer. Officials with the city’s public works department said cameras could be placed into the sewer to see if there are other locations where gas lines have punctured the concrete.

Thousands of shoppers and workers at a mall were evacuated when a construction accident broke a gas main outside the construction site of a Target department store. About 2,500 to 3,000 people were in the shopping complex when the incident was reported at 11:52 a.m. There were no reports of injuries. Authorities blocked off the upper and lower decks of the parking area behind the Target structure. Motorists parked in that section of the garage were barred from the area as a precaution. The move was designed to prevent ignition of any pockets of gas until crews from Southern Connecticut Gas Co. arrived to shut off gas lines and give clearance. Fire officials said construction crews were drilling for installation of bollards when the gas main break occurred. A gas company official said identifying which gas lines to shut off was challenging because the mall was built in stages, and the company didn't want to affect other customers unnecessarily. An all-clear was given at 1:11 p.m. Officials said there would be an investigation to determine whether the contractor had proper clearance from the gas company before working near its lines.

Crews that struck a gas line earlier in the week, which caused part of the downtown area to be closed down, struck another — smaller — gas line. The fire department responded, but no buildings needed to be evacuated or streets closed and Northern Utilities had the line repaired quickly. There have been several gas line breaks in different parts of the city within the past year. According to fire officials, the reason for the leaks is always the same: records marking utility lines are old and sometimes lines have shifted. City officials said the city works with contractors and utility companies to get accurate locations, but the system is not fool-proof.

McKinney fire crews responded to a gas leak caused by construction crews working on a street renovation project. The leak occurred sometime before 3:38 p.m. near the intersection of Seneca and Throckmorton Street and prompted evacuations of nearby homes and the Holy Family School. Atmos Energy crews responded to the call shortly after a contractor hired by the city contacted the fire department after workers hit the gas line. McKinney fire and police responded to the call and blocked off portions of Throckmorton Street until Atmos Energy crews could shut off the leak around 4:30 p.m. A motorgrater lowering the street for the city's renovation project nicked one of the taps on the gas line and contacted the fire department. Fire officials and Atmos Energy crews responded to the scene and evacuated Holy Family School students and staff, as well as three area homes on Fenet Street, an Atmos Energy spokesman said. Atmos crews were able to close off the gas line less than an hour after the initial call. Atmos and fire crews also inspected nearby homes and underground sewer lines to make sure none of the gas leaking out into other lines or homes.

A geyser of 40,000 gallons of murky water blasted out of a hole at the intersection of U.S. 29 and East Rio Road. A construction crew accidentally severed a water pipe under Rio Road, causing water to shoot up to 15 feet in the air. The crew was boring a tunnel under the road to install a gas line as part of a shopping complex being built at the southeast corner of the U.S. 29-Rio intersection. During the operation, the drill bit hit a 2-inch water pipe. The accident shut down water service to a SunTrust bank branch, officials said. The pipe break created a river of muddy water that flowed downward through much of the Albemarle Square shopping center’s parking lot. One construction worker was sitting nearby in his pickup with the window down. When the drill nicked the underground pipe, a wave of brown water shot out of the hole and arced directly into his truck. His white shirt was covered in mud stains. The project’s foreman said the water pipe had not been marked and that the accident was not his crew’s fault.

UPDATE Crews boring for soil samples ruptured a gas line that sparked a blaze and touched off a series of explosions May 17. No injuries were reported. Total damages are estimated at $1 million. Workers for an Ohio-based paving company struck a 6-inch natural gas line at the Martin Marietta Aggregates complex at 15215 River Ave. about 8:20 a.m., fire officials said. It took approximately one hour for Vectren Energy to shut down the gas leak. At that point, gas which had flowed into a nearby storage building owned by Shelly & Sands ignited. Oxygen, propane and acetylene canisters stored in the building began exploding forcing firefighters to back off to a safe distance. Water had to be trucked to the site by fire department tankers. It took approximately 90 minutes to bring the fire under control. Thick clouds of black smoke could be seen for miles. Firefighters monitored the air for toxic emissions. Nothing dangerous was detected. The Shelly & Sands building and a paving machine inside were totally destroyed. Several employees’ cars parked nearby were also destroyed. Fire officials said the incident could have been avoided had the company contacted the One-Call center prior to digging.

More than 100 people were killed in a fire that engulfed homes and schools at Ijegun village in the Lagos district of Alimosho after a pipeline was damaged. Many of the dead included schoolchildren who were believed to be killed in the ensuing stampede as people fled in panic from the flames. More than 20 people with injuries and taken them to hospital for treatment, a Red Cross official at the scene said. The disaster was the latest in a series of pipeline explosions or blazes caused by damage or theft which have killed more than 1200 people since 2000 in Nigeria, the world's eighth largest oil exporter and Africa's top producer. The pipeline rupture at Ijegun occurred during work to build a road. A bulldozer moving earth struck the pipeline buried beneath the surface. The fuel leaking from the broken pipe caught fire and exploded, sending people fleeing in panic. At least 15 homes were burned. Three people were taken to Parkland Memorial Hospital in Dallas after a gas line exploded in a McKinney neighborhood. Two houses in the 600 block of Fenet Street were destroyed by the blast, which occurred about 5:50 p.m. A third home was damaged in the explosion, officials said. The fire chief said the homes were engulfed in flames when crews arrived. Firefighters began working to remove those injured and then took a defensive stance against the blazes. The fire chief said workers, who were not among those injured, were boring underground along Throckmorton Street just north of Fenet when they struck the gas line. Gas apparently went into the homes and then ignited. An official with Atmos Energy said a gas contractor was responsible for the explosion. As firefighters doused a burning home on Fenet near Throckmorton, they also sprayed the area near the boring machine to help dissipate the natural gas. UPDATE While no criminal charges will be filed in connection with a natural gas explosion that leveled a historic church last month, more rigorous safety procedures should be implemented for road construction projects statewide to prevent any similar incidents, according to the police chief. The chief said that his department should have notified as soon as there was a (natural gas) smell detected. The Police Department's investigative report on the explosion that destroyed First Baptist Church and two adjacent houses shows that no one from the construction crew or We Energies personnel at the scene called 911 to report a gas smell after an unmarked pipe had been ruptured during road excavation. A passer-by, at the prompting of an aunt she was visiting, called 911 at 1:19 p.m. to report "a natural gas smell so strong it made her nauseous and made her eyes water." Seven minutes later the Oconomowoc Fire Department arrived at the scene to find We Energies staff already there discussing the situation with the construction crew, which struck the pipe while installing a new sewer line in the road in front of the church. The explosion occurred at 1:32 p.m., six minutes after the arrival of Fire Department personnel. After the explosion, the state Department of Transportation, which is overseeing the reconstruction of Highway 16 through the city, put in place stricter safety protocols for the project. The new rules call for work to stop immediately if an unmarked pipe is found during excavating and for work crews to call 911.

The couple from Bloomfield Hills, Mich., died early July 10, 2006, while vacationing in a cottage with their children and other family members about 200 miles north of Milwaukee. Twelve other people were injured. They were asleep when several explosions rocked the resort about 2:15 a.m., court filings said. Door County officials have said an electrical contractor installing some underground electric lines for an upgrade of the resort's docks ruptured a buried propane line three days before the explosion. It wasn't clear what caused the propane to ignite.

Gas

A construction worker operating a backhoe accidentally severed a high-pressure natural gas line on Lafayette Boulevard forcing fire officials to close down a stretch of the downtown thoroughfare and evacuate nearby buildings for about 30 minutes. Shortly after 1 p.m., police and firefighters shut down a block-long section of Lafayette Boulevard, from the federal courthouse to the State Police barracks as odors of the chemically treated natural gas filled the air. They also ordered people to leave the federal building, Bob's Discount Furniture and the Housatonic Community College parking garage. The leak occurred in the driveway of 881 Lafayette Boulevard, a former medical office building that is being converted into a condominium complex. A construction worker apparently digging up the development's parking lot accidentally ruptured the gas line. Emergency crews from Southern Connecticut Gas Company were called to the scene and quickly stopped the leak. Firefighters began a building-by-building inspection to see if there was a dangerous of concentration of gas nearby.

A gas leak on Westmorland Road caused city police and fire to evacuate several houses and businesses. A section of the east side street was also shut down in the middle of rush hour. Workers doing an excavation on the street struck a two-inch natural gas line near Mountain Road, puncturing the line. An area of approximately two blocks was evacuated for almost 90 minutes. Fire officials said the evacuations were simply precautionary. The pipe that was struck had been located by Enbridge for the contractor, but somehow the pipe was still struck and broken during the excavation. Pipeline officials said they go out and train contractors on safe digging, safe excavation practices for working around gas pipes.

Four blocks of 24 Avenue were closed for several hours after construction crews damaged gas lines. The lines were impacted by a crew working with an excavator at a project on 163 Street north of 24 Avenue. The damage caused gas to leak from two places. The 1½-inch line was damaged where there was contact with the machinery. The force of the damage pulled the 1¼-inch pipe from an eight-inch pipe, officials said. A Terasen technician was on-site within 10 minutes of the report. Repair crews were there within 20 minutes. No customers were affected during the repair. Any penalties for the damage will depend on whether the construction crew took steps to locate and map the pipes’ location before digging, a Terasen spokesperson said.

Thousands of train riders were left stranded and commutes snarled for more than nine hours by a natural gas leak. The gas leak, at a Jeffrey Road construction site where a road underpass is being built, started when a work crew hit a gas line around 8:30 a.m. The workers were drilling for pylons, officials said, when they hit the pipe with an auger. Though rail lines were re-opened just before 6 p.m., officials were left scrambling to bus commuters around the closed lines after repairs took longer than expected. Wind blew the gas eastward, leading management of the nearby Meadows Mobile Home Community to voluntarily evacuate around two dozen of the parks 360 homes. Southern California Gas Company workers used jackhammers and shovels to dig toward the gas pipe in two separate locations, pinching it closed east and west of the leak to prevent the flow of natural gas through the damaged section. The damaged line was an 8-inch plastic gas main about 14 feet underground, 100 feet north of Jeffrey Road and 50 feet west of the train tracks, according to Orange County Fire Authority and gas company officials.

A construction crew working on the White Street beautification project hit a gas line rupturing a 4-inch line and sending emergency personnel and a Yankee Gas repair crew rushing to the site. The accident occurred about 10 a.m. near the Superior Court building, but no one was injured and none of the surrounding buildings, including the courthouse, had to be evacuated. A Yankee Gas crew was on the scene in about 20 minutes and sealed off the leak until another crew arrived to make permanent repairs, a spokesman said. That work took several hours to complete. It was the second time in a week that a gas line broke on White Street. On April 29, another crew hit a line a short distance away while reconstructing the White Street railroad crossing. The first leak was more severe than the second and forced the evacuation of several businesses near the crossing. No traffic delays resulted from the accident because cars were already being detoured around the site due to the railroad work. The area where the break occurred had been marked by Yankee Gas under the Call Before You Dig program. Officials said workmen weren't digging in the area when the break occurred. Instead, they had rested the bucket from a piece of construction equipment on the ground above the gas line, and the pressure fractured what the city engineer said was "an old cast-iron pipe."

Traffic was rerouted around four blocks of downtown for an hour and 10 minutes after a city public works department backhoe hit a natural gas line in an alley between Florida and Hendry Avenues. At least three businesses were evacuated while Central Florida Gas workers repaired the leak. Businesses farther from the leak were notified of the break, but were not evacuated. The accident occurred at 2:40 p.m., and repairs were completed at 3:50. The police, fire, and public works departments blocked off traffic on Main Street and Summerlin Street between Jackson and Wilson Avenues. Gas rushed from the broken line with a loud “whoosh” for the better part of an hour. The gas company repair crew initially plugged the broken gas line with a half-inch wooden plug, then put a permanent cap on the line. The city crew was using a backhoe to prepare for installation of a new PVC water line to several offices in the 400 block of East Main Street.
